17 May Sutton Vane Associates win at the Lighting Design Awards 2017
Internationally recognised designers, Sutton Vane Associates were proud winners at this year’s Lighting Design Awards. The team won Heritage Project of the Year with their lighting design in York Minster.
The Lighting Design Awards is the Oscars of the lighting industry. Projects from 15 countries – including Iran, Israel, Kenya, Finland, Canada, the US, Italy, France, Germany, the UAE, Australia, Switzerland, Spain and Chile – were recognised and rewarded at the forty-first Lighting Design Awards in London.
The winners were announced at a glamorous black-tie event at the London Hilton Park Lane attended by over 700 designers, architects and suppliers and hosted by Ian Stone.
The companies lighting design project at York Minster, described as ‘one of the greatest cathedrals in the world’ required a full lighting strategy. Sutton Vane Associates started with the Nave, Nave Aisles and the Quire Screen.
The Nave is a very important part of the cathedral as it can decide if a visitor enters or not. The decision was made to use a design with concealed fittings to show the architecture as much as possible and minimise the visibility of technology. Due to the variety of events held at the cathedral, the design included hidden push buttons to select the most commonly used scenes, allowing different areas of the Nave to be lit at different levels of brightness.
Its innovative design makes them the perfect candidate for the Heritage Project of Year award they received.
Sutton Vane Associates is internationally recognised as a leader in heritage lighting design and has successfully completed a wide range of interior and exterior projects in the UK, Europe and the Middle East from castles and colleges through to places of worship. The practice is known for ingenious and inventive lighting schemes that respect and preserve the fabric of period buildings, while also enabling them to be put to new uses. They have been rated as one of the top 10 lighting designers worldwide.
The company say they “are absolutely thrilled” to have won the award.
You can hear leading lighting designer Mark Sutton Vane talking about lighting design in the context of exhibitions at the Museums and Heritage Show on Thursday 18th May, 4pm at the Design Theatre, Olympia.
